VanOC Ski Jumping
Last week I went up to Whistler Olympic Park to video ski jumping. We left Vancouver first thing in the morning to meet the Fox Australia crew to document the athletes training and learn a thing or two about ski jumping. We had full access to athletes and facilities. I never thought getting off a chairlift without skies would be so difficult.
The athletes go down the inrun at 95 kilometres per hour and launch themselves off a 3 meter high jump 140 metres in distance. That's the length of two football fields. Their skies are 2.5 metres long and act as an airplane wing to generate lift. They are awarded points for both style and distance.
Right now I am sorting through the 2 hours of captured footage to make a 5 - 6 minute video on ski jumping. We interviewed Stephan Read of the Canadian National Ski Jumping team and Brent Morrice, Chairman of Ski Jumping Canada and had them tell us about the nuances of ski jumping. This video should be up and running on VanOC's website by weeks end.
